A share, or the whole machine

Clients often ask which is “safer.” The safer question is which object you want your name on.

A share is a fraction of one machine Montaris already runs. At 0.05 you are entitled to five hundredths of that unit’s pool payout, and you carry five hundredths of its draw and fee. You cannot point to a fan and say it is yours. You can point to a line on the statement.

A whole machine in the hosting hall is the opposite. The serial number is yours. Montaris is the landlord and the pair of hands. If the board fails, the care plan says who pays for the replacement. If you later sell it, you are selling hardware, subject to the hall’s rules for moving it.

The home calculator lets you slide between those sizes because the arithmetic is the same shape. The contract is not. Read the term sheet for the word “title” before you fund either one.
